DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD?

DO YOU REGULARLY CHECK YOUR FOOD LABELS? 

We live in a society where convenience and price often rules our decision making process. But do you know what you are actually eating and what is in your food? 

Over the years I have become very aware of how many numbers are added to food and I make a conscious choice to buy wholefoods most of the time. Sometimes I buy packaged foods and this is when it’s particularly important to know what I’m buying. I have become very good and understanding what preservatives are in food because they are in almost everything. 

My eldest son loves sausages and I have spent a long time looking for the healthiest sausages because he eats them every week. Most of the time we buy Cleavers sausages because they use use organic ingredients and contain no nasties. The ingredient list of their sausages reads like this:  Organic Beef (81%), Organic Carrot, Water, Organic Tapioca Starch, Organic Sautéed Onion (Organic Onion, Rendered Organic Grass Fed Beef Fat), Australian Sea Salt, Organic Garlic, Organic Black Pepper, Natural Casing.

Unfortuately on my recent trip to the supermarket these sausages weren’t available so I went looking down the sausage aisle for an alternative. The best sausages I could find had an ingredients list that read like this: Australian Beef (70%), Carrot, Sauteed Onion, Rice Flour, Salt, Parsley, Preservative (223), Mineral Salt (451), Herbs and Spices, Spice Extract (Paprika Oleoresin), Natural Hog Casing.

These ingredients may seem harmless but these sausages contain the preservative 223 which is a sulphite called Sodium metabisulphite orvmetabisulfite, meta, which can cause gastric irritation and hives and are linked with intolerance reactions, particularly for asthmatics. Not something I want to be feeding my 6 year old (or anyone for that matter).

The sad thing is I couldn’t find another  brand of sausage that didn’t have this preservative in it. 

So I walked out of the supermarket without sausages that day. 

I believe the only way we will ever change what is added to our food is not to buy these products. If we all took the time to check food labels, these food companies would have to change the way they process food. 

So next time you are in the supermarket, check the ingredients list on each item you buy and choose the healthiest option. If you don’t already do this, you may be surprised what is added to many of your weekly staples. 

So why do food manufacturers use these harmful preservatives rather than natural preservatives? Because using natural ingredients comes at a higher cost and artificial preservatives helps to decrease the price of food.

When we consume too many processed foods it can have a negative impact on our health from poor digestion, increased inflammation, stress, lack of energy, poor sleep, fluctuating moods and lack of focus. 

Great health has to start from the food we put in our bodies. Food is our life source and if we keep feeding our bodies artificial ingredients instead of real food, it will impact you in some way.

When I speak to people, the number 1 thing they mostly want is to have more energy. Energy comes from the food we eat so often we can increase our energy levels just by making changes to our eating habits. 

So my rule of thumb when shopping is to choose products with the least number of ingredients and choose items that don’t have nasty numbers.  

Not all preservatives are created equal and there are some preservatives that are naturally occuring and are safe to eat. To help you out I have listed all the additives that are found in food and whether they are OK, use CAUTION or AVOID.
